Angela Merkels Farewell

Angela Merkel's Farewell

A New Era for Germany

By Jenny Hill, BBC Berlin correspondent

These young Germans are among a new generation. ___ BERLIN In a ceremonial military send-off to mark the end of her 16 years as chancellor, Angela Merkel stood at the podium in front of a phalanx of soldiers wearing black uniforms, their rifles held with gleaming precision. Behind her, the flag of the European Union fluttered in the breeze. The rain had stopped, but the gray sky seemed to reflect the mood of many Germans. They were saying goodbye to a leader who had guided them through some of the most turbulent times in their country's recent history. For 16 years, Merkel had been a steady presence, a symbol of stability in a world that was often chaotic. She had led Germany through the global financial crisis, the eurozone crisis, and the migrant crisis. She had also been a strong advocate for European unity, and she had played a key role in resolving the Ukrainian conflict. But now, Merkel was stepping down. And as she stood there on the podium, it was clear that she was leaving behind a legacy that would be hard to match. "I am filled with gratitude," she said, her voice breaking slightly. "I have had the great privilege of serving my country for 16 years. It has been an honor." With those words, Merkel turned and walked away, disappearing into the building behind her. The crowd erupted in applause, and the soldiers presented arms. It was a moment that marked the end of an era in German politics. And as the rain began to fall again, it was clear that Germany was entering a new chapter.
